The programme seeks to provide concrete evidence of the nature and scale of detrimental changes arising from anthropogenic activities and to also serve as a guide, direct and evacuate the success of conservation interventions.
Activities undertaken include routine surveillance of water quality in the water bodies, development of infrastructure to measure hydrological and meteorological parameters.
Investigations to determine the role of pollution in causing morbidity and mortality among resident wildlife populations and dissemination of research information to provide scientific basis for informed conservation and management.
Research and monitoring (biodiversity, water quality and quantity, and livelihood security)
1. Identify and map out how and where anthropogenic activities (land use ?) are affecting lakes in at least five key catchments
2. Based on the findings from biological studies, identify and analyse specific and related socio-economic issues
3. Establish trends in water quality and quantity
4. Contribute and participate in climate change modeling exercises as they pertain to the lakes
5. Generate baseline data in all flamingo lakes (simultaneous census at least every three years)
6. Determine periodicity, locality, fecundity and survivorship of flamingos
7. Establish reference values (normal values) for flamingos and understand causes of mass mortality (health status)
8. Biodiversity target (collect distribution and abundance data for selected indicator species
